What is gotu kola?

Gotu kola (Centella asiatica, also known as Brahmi or Indian pennywort) is a perennial herbaceous plant that grows in Asia, Australia, Africa, and South America. It has been used for centuries in traditional medicine for its cognitive-enhancing, anti-inflammatory, wound-healing, and anti-anxiety effects.

The active compounds in gotu kola include triterpenoids, asiaticoside, madecassoside, and asiatic acid. These compounds are known to enhance neurotransmitter function and increase blood flow to the brain. As a result, gotu kola is considered an adaptogen, a natural substance that helps the body respond to stressors and promote balance.

Gotu kola is also used in skincare as it has been shown to stimulate the production of collagen, the protein responsible for skin elasticity. It is often incorporated in creams, lotions, and serums for treating stretch marks, wrinkles, and other signs of aging.

While gotu kola is generally considered safe, it should not be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Recommended dosage and safety precautions should be discussed with a healthcare professional before use.
